What Is a Square Yard?

Understanding the basics of the square yard unit.

A square yard is the area covered by a square that measures one yard on each side. One yard is 3 feet, so one square yard equals 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. In metric terms, 1 square yard is about 0.8361 square meters.

People use square yards to measure carpet, flooring, paving, land plots, and construction materials. The unit is common in the US, UK, India, and Pakistan.

How to Calculate Square Yards?

Simple formulas to convert any measurement into square yards.

To calculate square yards from a rectangle, multiply the length by the width (both in yards). If your measurements are in feet, multiply length × width in feet, then divide by 9. If you're working in inches, multiply length × width, then divide by 1,296.

For triangles, use ½ × base × height (in yards). For circles, use π × radius² (in yards). If your measurements are in other units, first calculate the area in that unit, then convert to square yards using the appropriate factor.

Square Yard Formulas
From Yards
Area (yd²) = Length (yd) × Width (yd)
From Feet
Area (yd²) = (Length (ft) × Width (ft)) ÷ 9
From Inches
Area (yd²) = (Length (in) × Width (in)) ÷ 1,296

Square Yards to Acres & Square Feet

The two most common conversions — with an interactive converter.

Square Yards → Acres

1 acre = 4,840 square yards. To convert square yards to acres, divide by 4,840. For example, 9,680 sq yd ÷ 4,840 = 2 acres.

yd²
= 0 acres

Square Yards ↔ Square Feet

1 square yard = 9 square feet. Multiply square yards by 9 to get square feet. Divide square feet by 9 to get square yards.

yd²
= 0 ft²

Convert Square Feet → Square Yards

Divide any square footage value by 9. That's it. A 450 sq ft apartment is 50 square yards. Carpet retailers sell by the square yard — so this conversion matters when you're shopping.

Square Yard Compared to Square Meter

Side-by-side comparison of the two most common area units worldwide.

A square yard and a square meter measure the same thing — area — but they come from different measurement systems. The yard belongs to the Imperial/US customary system, while the meter is metric. One square yard equals 0.8361 square meters, and one square meter equals 1.1960 square yards.

In practice, a square meter is about 20% larger than a square yard. If you're buying tiles priced per m² or comparing international property listings, knowing this difference saves money and avoids costly mistakes. Countries like India and Pakistan use both systems — land is sold in square yards (or "gaj"), but construction materials often come in metric.

Quick rule of thumb: multiply square yards by 0.836 to get square meters, or multiply square meters by 1.196 to get square yards.

Square Yard in Square Metres

Exact conversion values with an instant calculator for any amount.

Square Yards → Square Metres

Multiply square yards by 0.83612736 to get square metres. This factor comes from the definition: 1 yard = 0.9144 metres, so 1 yd² = 0.9144² = 0.83612736 m².

yd²

Square Metres → Square Yards

Divide square metres by 0.83612736, or multiply by 1.19599. Useful when you see property sizes in m² and want the value in square yards (gaj).

Square Yards Vastu Calculator

Check if your plot dimensions align with Vastu Shastra principles.

Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian system of architecture that links building dimensions to well-being and prosperity. In Vastu, the total plot area in square yards matters — but the length-to-width ratio matters even more. A ratio between 1:1 and 1:1.5 is considered ideal.

Square and rectangular plots are preferred. An east- or north-facing plot with balanced proportions scores highest. Irregular shapes — L-shaped, triangular, or plots with cut corners — are generally avoided in Vastu.

Common Vastu-compliant plot sizes in India include 100 sq yd (10 × 10 yd), 200 sq yd (10 × 20 yd), and 267 sq yd (13.3 × 20 yd). Use the calculator on the right to check any dimensions.

Yard Size Calculator

Measure your yard and see its area in every unit — instantly.

Whether you're planning a lawn, a garden bed, or a new fence, the first step is knowing your yard's exact size. Measure the length and width in feet (or any unit), and this calculator converts it to square yards, square feet, square meters, and acres.

Typical yard sizes in the US range from 150 sq yd (a small city lot) to 1,000+ sq yd (suburban properties). In South Asia, residential plots commonly come in 100, 200, 250, and 500 square yard sizes.

Knowing your yard size in multiple units helps you order the right amount of sod, seed, gravel, or mulch — and compare prices from suppliers who use different units.

This Square Yards Calculator — An Example

A real-world walkthrough so you can see exactly how it works.

1

Measure your room

Say you have a room that's 15 feet long and 12 feet wide.

2

Enter the numbers

Type 15 in the length field, 12 in the width field, and pick "ft" as the unit.

3

Read the result

The calculator shows: 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft ÷ 9 = 20 square yards. You also see it in square meters (16.72 m²), square inches (25,920 in²), and other units.

4

Add cost (optional)

If carpet costs $25 per square yard, type 25 in the cost field. The calculator returns: 20 yd² × $25 = $500 total.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about square yard calculations.

There are 4,840 square yards in one acre. One acre = 43,560 sq ft, and 43,560 ÷ 9 = 4,840.

Divide the square feet number by 9. For example, 81 sq ft ÷ 9 = 9 square yards.

Measure length and width in yards, then multiply them. If your measurements are in feet, multiply length × width, then divide by 9.

40 yards × 3 = 120 feet. One yard always equals 3 feet.

If you have an area in square yards, multiply by 9 to get square feet. For example, 5 yd² × 9 = 45 ft².

Multiply your length × width in inches to get square inches, then divide by 1,296. One square yard = 1,296 square inches.

One square yard = 9 square feet. That's a 3 ft × 3 ft area.

2 square yards = 18 square feet or about 1.67 square meters. Picture a large door laid flat on the ground.

100 square yards = 900 square feet ≈ 83.6 square meters. It's about the floor area of a small house.

1,000 square yards = 9,000 square feet ≈ 836 square meters. That's close to a quarter of an acre.

If the squares are 10 in × 10 in (100 sq in each), then 1,296 ÷ 100 ≈ 12.96 squares fit in one square yard.

If each square is 2.5 ft × 2.5 ft = 6.25 sq ft, then 9 ÷ 6.25 ≈ 1.44 squares fit in one square yard.

6 × 1,296 = 7,776 square inches.

Split the irregular shape into rectangles, triangles, and circles. Calculate each piece separately. Add all the areas together, then convert the total to square yards. For example, an L-shaped room can be split into two rectangles.
