What is Square Yard Landscaping Calculator?

The Square Yard Landscaping Calculator is used to quickly calculate key measurements and estimates so you can plan materials, costs, and project scope with confidence.

1

Measure Your Yard

Measure the length and width of the lawn or bed area. For irregular shapes, break into rectangles and add the areas. Subtract the house footprint, driveway, walkways, and existing garden beds from the total.

2

Choose Your Material

Select Sod for instant green coverage. Choose Grass Seed for budget-friendly new lawns (takes 2-3 weeks to sprout). Pick Fertilizer for existing lawn care. Select Landscape Fabric for weed barriers under mulch or gravel beds.

3

Add Waste Factor

For sod, add 5-10% for cuts around curves and edges. For seed, add 10% for uneven distribution. For landscape fabric, add 10-15% for overlap at seams. Our default is 10%.

4

Example: 50×30 ft Backyard Lawn

Area = 1,500 ft² = 166.7 yd². For sod: 1,500 ÷ 10 = 150 rolls (+ 10% waste = 165 rolls) or about 3.7 pallets. For seed: about 10 lbs at 6 lbs/1,000 ft². Cost: sod ~$500-$1,000, seed ~$30-$60.

Square Yard Landscaping Calculator Formula

Comparing the two main ways to establish a lawn.

Sod gives you an instant lawn — fully grown grass rolled out like a carpet. You get immediate results, erosion control, and a thick lawn from day one. But it costs 5-10× more than seed and requires careful watering for the first 2-3 weeks. Sod works best when you need quick results or are dealing with slopes prone to erosion.

Grass seed is far cheaper and gives you more grass variety options. But it takes 7-21 days to germinate and 2-3 months for a full lawn. You'll need to keep the soil consistently moist during germination and manage weed competition. Seed works best for large areas where sod costs would be prohibitive.

For both, proper soil preparation is critical. Till the top 4-6 inches, grade for drainage (slope away from the house), and add topsoil if the existing soil is poor. Test soil pH — most grasses prefer 6.0-7.0. A little prep work upfront saves years of lawn problems.

Landscaping Calculator — FAQ

Common questions about landscaping material estimation.

Measure length × width in feet, divide by 9. A sod roll covers ~10 ft² (1.11 yd²). Divide your area by 10 for the number of rolls. Add 5-10% for waste.

For new lawns: 4-8 lbs per 1,000 ft² (~0.04-0.07 lbs per yd²). For overseeding: 2-4 lbs per 1,000 ft². Rates vary by grass type.

$1.50-$4.00 per yd² for material. Installation adds $1-$3/yd². A 3,000 ft² yard runs $1,000-$3,000 fully installed.

About 1 lb nitrogen per 1,000 ft² per application. A 50-lb bag of 20-10-10 covers ~10,000 ft². Most lawns need 3-4 applications/year.

Break the yard into rectangles, triangles, and circles. Calculate each area, add them up, and subtract areas for the house, driveway, and patios.

Equal to the bed area plus 10-15% for overlap at seams. Standard rolls are 3-4 ft wide. For 200 ft², order about 25-27 yd² of fabric.
