Enter length, width, and depth to calculate volume in cubic yards — the number you need when ordering mulch, gravel, soil, concrete, or any bulk material.
The Square Yards Calculator with Depth is used to quickly calculate key measurements and estimates so you can plan materials, costs, and project scope with confidence.
Cubic Yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27. Or in yard units: Length yd × Width yd × Depth yd = Cubic yards directly.
Area = 200 ft² = 22.2 yd². Volume = 200 × 0.25 = 50 ft³ ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards.
Area = 1,500 ft² = 166.7 yd². Volume = 1,500 × 0.5 = 750 ft³ ÷ 27 = 27.78 cubic yards.
At 3 inches deep, 1 cubic yard covers about 108 square feet (12 yd²). At 6 inches deep, 1 cubic yard covers 54 square feet (6 yd²). At 12 inches, it covers just 27 square feet (3 yd²).
Common areas × depths.
| Area (ft²) | 2" deep | 4" deep | 6" deep | 12" deep |
|---|
yd² × depth (in yards) = yd³. For depth in inches: yd² × (inches ÷ 36).
Square yards = 2D area. Cubic yards = 3D volume. Add depth to convert from area to volume.
At 1": 324 ft². At 2": 162 ft². At 3": 108 ft². At 4": 81 ft². At 6": 54 ft². At 12": 27 ft².
100 × (3/36) = 8.33 cubic yards.
When ordering bulk materials sold by cubic yard: mulch, gravel, topsoil, sand, concrete, asphalt.
