What is Flooring Square Yard Calculator?

The Flooring Square Yard Calculator is used to quickly calculate key measurements and estimates so you can plan materials, costs, and project scope with confidence.

1

Measure the Room

Measure the longest length and widest width of the room in feet. Include closets and alcoves if they'll be floored. For L-shaped rooms, break into two rectangles and add the areas.

Select Your Flooring Type

Pick the flooring material. Each type has a typical box size and price point. Our presets fill in industry-standard values, but check the actual box coverage on the product you're buying — it varies by brand.

3

Add Waste Allowance

10% is standard for straightforward rectangular rooms. Use 15% for diagonal layouts or rooms with lots of cuts around cabinets and doorways. Patterned tile may need 20%.

4

Example: 14×16 ft Living Room

Area = 224 ft² = 24.89 yd². With 10% waste = 246 ft². Hardwood at 22 ft²/box = 12 boxes. At $6/ft² = $1,478 material cost. Add $2-$4/ft² for installation = $1,970-$2,462 total installed.

What to know before choosing your flooring material.

Hardwood is the premium choice — beautiful, durable, and adds resale value. Costs $4-$12/ft² for material and lasts 25-100 years with refinishing. It's sold in boxes of ~20-22 ft² and measured in square feet. Avoid in bathrooms and basements (moisture damage).

Laminate mimics hardwood at a fraction of the cost ($1-$3/ft²). It's scratch-resistant and easy to install as a DIY project. Lasts 10-20 years. Not waterproof — use luxury vinyl plank (LVP) for wet areas. Sold in boxes of ~20-24 ft².

Vinyl plank (LVP) is the fastest-growing flooring category. It's waterproof, durable, and available in realistic wood/stone looks. Costs $2-$6/ft² and works everywhere including bathrooms and kitchens. Click-lock installation makes it ideal for DIY.

Carpet is the only flooring still commonly sold by the square yard. Costs $2-$8/ft² ($18-$72/yd²). Sold off rolls, not in boxes. Soft, warm, and sound-absorbing — but harder to clean and shorter lifespan (5-15 years).
