What is Square Yard Asphalt Calculator?

The Square Yard Asphalt Calculator is used to quickly calculate key measurements and estimates so you can plan materials, costs, and project scope with confidence.

1

Measure the Paving Area

Measure the length and width of the area to be paved. For driveways with turnarounds or irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and add them together. Include any aprons or transition areas at the street connection.

Surface Course (1.5-2") Binder Course (2-3") Base Course (4-8") Subgrade (Compacted Soil)
2

Choose the Right Thickness

Residential driveways: 2 inches. Overlay on existing asphalt: 1.5 inches. Commercial parking lots: 3 inches. Heavy truck areas: 4 inches or more. These are the asphalt layer only — you also need a proper gravel base underneath (6-8 inches).

3

Pick Your Mix and Cost

Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is standard for permanent paving. Warm mix uses less energy and costs about the same. Cold patch is for repairs only. Enter the local price per ton — call your nearest asphalt plant for a current quote.

4

Example: 40×12 ft Driveway

A 40 ft × 12 ft driveway at 2" thick: Area = 480 ft² = 53.3 yd². Volume = 480 × (2/12) = 80 ft³. Weight = 80 × 145 = 11,600 lbs = 5.8 tons. With 5% waste ≈ 6.1 tons. At $100/ton = $610 for materials.

Square Yard Asphalt Calculator Formula

What you need to know before paving.

Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is a combination of aggregate (crushed stone, sand, gravel) bound with asphalt cement (bitumen). It's heated to about 300°F at the plant, delivered by truck, and laid while hot. A properly installed asphalt surface lasts 15-20 years with regular sealcoating every 2-3 years.

Thickness matters more than you'd think. Each inch of asphalt adds significant structural capacity. A 2-inch layer works for light passenger car traffic. But if you're parking heavy trucks or an RV, you need at least 3-4 inches. The base layer underneath is equally important — 6-8 inches of compacted aggregate provides the foundation.

Asphalt is sold by the ton, not by the cubic yard. One ton of hot mix covers about 80 square feet at 2 inches thick. The density is roughly 145 lbs per cubic foot — significantly heavier than concrete at 150 lbs/ft³. Our calculator uses these industry-standard values for accurate material estimation.

Asphalt Calculator — FAQ

Common questions about asphalt paving estimation.

At 2 inches thick, you need about 110 lbs (0.055 tons) of hot mix asphalt per square yard. At 3 inches thick, that rises to about 165 lbs (0.083 tons) per square yard.

One cubic yard of hot mix asphalt weighs approximately 2.025 tons (4,050 lbs), based on a density of 145-150 lbs per cubic foot.

A residential driveway needs 2-3 inches of hot mix over a 6-8 inch compacted gravel base. Commercial driveways typically need 3-4 inches. Heavy truck areas need 4-6 inches.

Hot mix asphalt costs $85-$150 per ton for material only. Installed, expect $3-$5 per square foot for residential driveways, including base preparation.

One ton of asphalt covers approximately 80 square feet at 2 inches thick, or about 9 square yards. At 3 inches thick, coverage drops to about 53 square feet per ton.

Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is heated at the plant and laid while hot — it's stronger and used for permanent paving. Cold mix doesn't need heating and is used for temporary patches and repairs. For driveways, always use hot mix.
